The State Department for Irrigation, under the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, recently conducted a high-level capacity-building mission to Baringo Countys Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, Livestock, and Blue Economy. Led by Deputy Director Esther Musyoka, the national delegation began their visit with a courtesy call to the CECM, Hon. Risper Chepkong'a, before engaging in strategic discussions with a leadership team that included Chief Officers Dr. Milka Toromo and Mr. Wendot Chemjor, the County Director of Agriculture, and departmental engineers. This initial meeting set the stage for a collaborative review of the countys agricultural milestones and the specific challenges hindering its irrigation potential.
The engagement transitioned into a comprehensive technical session aimed at bridging the gap between national policy and grassroots implementation. A significant portion of the dialogue focused on the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Programme, identifying key interventions to bolster Baringo's resilience against climate volatility. Furthermore, the State Department provided targeted training to the County Irrigation Development Unit (CIDU), covering essential technical areas such as irrigation system operation and maintenance, the fundamentals of scheme design, and the preparation of detailed Bills of Quantities. By prioritizing the climate-proofing of infrastructure, the visit solidified a vital partnership between the national and county governments, ensuring that irrigation development remains both sustainable and future-ready.
