Baringo County is one of the largest counties in Kenya, covering approximately 11,075 km², with a relatively low population density compared to many other counties. Administratively, it is divided into seven sub-counties Baringo South, Mogotio, Eldama Ravine, Baringo Central, Baringo North, Tiaty West, and Tiaty East comprising 30 electoral wards and 184 locations. The county headquarters is Kabarnet Town, located about 140 km from Nakuru City and approximately 295 km from Nairobi. Nearly 80% of the county is classified as arid and semi-arid land, shaping both settlement patterns and livelihood systems.

The county is predominantly inhabited by the Tugen community, a Kalenjinsub-group, alongside minority communities including the Ilchamus (aMaa-speaking community), Pokot, Endorois, Kikuyu, Turkana, and Nubianpopulations. Settlement is largely concentrated in the highland areas and urbancentres, while the expansive arid regions of Tiaty, parts of Baringo North,Marigat, and Mogotio remain sparsely populated, offering vast rangelands thatsupport pastoral livelihoods and livestock production systems.

Despite its diverse ecological and climatic conditions, Baringo presentsa broad and resilient economic base anchored on livestock production andagro-pastoralism. The county is a key producer of meat and dairy products, withthriving milk value chains in the highland zones and extensive beef, chevon andmutton production in the arid and semi-arid lands. Coffee farming is alsoemerging as an important highland cash crop, particularly in suitableagro-ecological zones such as parts of Eldama Ravine, Baringo Central, BaringoNorth and Tiaty West, contributing to household incomes as a high potentialwealth builder. These varied agro-ecological zones enable a diversifiedproduction system that ranges from intensive farming in the highlands toextensive pastoralism in the lowlands.

Beyond agriculture, Baringo is steadily positioning itself as a tourismand investment destination. The county is home to iconic natural attractionsincluding Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria, renowned for their scenic beauty, richbiodiversity, and flamingo populations, as well as unique geological featuresand hot springs. This exceptional geological and ecological heritage hasfurther positioned Baringo as a strong candidate for designation as a GlobalGeopark, reflecting its outstanding geo-diversity and internationalsignificance. This natural endowment, combined with its picturesque landscapes,is strengthening Baringos profile as a growing tourism hub within the RiftValley corridor.

In addition, the county is increasingly emerging as a commercial andservice hub, supported by growing urban centres such as Kabarnet the CountyHeadquarters, with the newly created Municipality Towns of Marigat, EldamaRavine and Mogotio consolidating their statuses as trade hubs. These towns areexpanding as centres of trade, logistics, and agro-processing, linking ruralproducers to regional markets.

Baringo also holds significant potential in renewable energy,particularly in solar power due to its high solar irradiation levels inexpansive lands, as well as geothermal energy prospects within Silale in Tiatywithin the Rift Valley system. These opportunities position the county as afuture leader in clean energy development, industrial growth, and greeninvestment.
