The Commission for University Education (CUE) has today been advised to assist institutions of higher learning to comply with standards and operational guidelines in university campuses so as to improve access to quality education in the country. Speaking when he officiated the beginning of a three day training of Interdenominational Pastors from across Baringo on various management skills, counseling and social development courses, Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi said the demand for higher education in the country has been rising over the years and strategies of ensuring access to as many residents across the nation as possible need to be developed and existing ones enhanced. “We need as many as possible of our youth to access higher education and we need to assist campuses to comply with the requirements of higher education training even as we enforce the existing guidelines.” Said Cheboi. Cheboi  called on the institutions of higher learning to work with all stakeholders to ensure they meet required standards as quality in education must not be compromised. "Kabarnet and other campuses must move with speed in ensuring they operate within the stipulated conditions to avert closure." Governor Cheboi advised. Student leaders in the Campus sent out a passionate appeal to the government to reconsider the closure of their university branch as this would disenfranchise them of their right to higher education. Saying that closing Kabarnet Campus would greatly inconvenience learners in the institution, President of Kabarnet Campus Students Union Priscilla Nakumol who was flanked by her Deputy Alex Siloi said the existence of the university branch was to most of the students there, the only chance at getting access to higher learning. “Most of us live at home and we therefore do not incur extra costs which many of us would otherwise not afford. If we were transferred to our main campus all the way in Kisii, who would meet the extra costs of living?” Ms Nakumol posed. The three day learning by pastors is sponsored by Kisii University Kabarnet Campus and aims at building the pastors’ capacity to provide leadership and assistance to members of their congregations. The Commission for University Education (CUE) has ordered the closure of 10 out of 13 Kisii University campuses in the western, Nyanza and Rift Valley regions. While announcing the closure, the commission gave the university 90 days to wind up and relocate the students to accredited campuses. The 10 Kisii University campuses to be closed are in Eldoret, Eldama Ravine, Nyamira, Kabarnet, Migori, Ogembo, Keroka, Kehancha, Kapenguria and Isebania.
