The county government of Baringo and the World Food Programme (WFP) Wednesday entered into a two year agreement on reinforcing the ability of the devolved unit in addressing food security challenges.

Ensuring citizens have adequate and nutritious food in a devolved function and WFP will be lending a helping hand to Baringo in support of the development of robust local systems to help in countering hunger and food insecurity.

Speaking when they signed the agreement with Baringo Governor Benjain Cheboi in their offices at the UN Headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi, WFP representative in Kenya and Country Director Annalisa Conte said WFP has worked closely with Baringo in addressing food insecurity.

Noting that the agreement with Baringo County was a first, Annalisa Conte said the formal agreement now allows the county to take advantage of WFP's decades of experience in designing and implementing programmes that improve access to food and water to vulnerable citizens.

The county Government is a first responder in food security emergencies and as such WFP expects to share with Baringo extensive skills to ensure you are well equipped to meet this important challenge, Said Conte.

While thanking WFP for the support, Baringo County Governor Benjamin Cheboi termed the partnership as timely saying that it is enormously important for counties to build the right capacity to asses, prepare for and effectively respond to food insecurity.

As a county, one of the outcomes that we want to see is the designing and implementation of strong development plans that will pave way for sustained economic growth for our people. And more importantly is to look at longer term measures to move Baringo to a people creating wealth and not worrying about food. Said Cheboi

Wajir, Marsabit, and Samburu counties  join Baringo County as counties expected to benefit from an investment of about USD 4.46 million (KShs 455 million)over a period of three years in building skills, enhancing social protection programmes, reinforcing emergency preparedness and response and other areas as part WFP resilience project financed by the Government of Sweden.
