Baringo County government has signed an MOU with Slovakia government to support Macadamia farmers in a two year programme that will see farmers supplied with 50,000 macadamia seedlings at subsidized prices.
Speaking after signing the partnership, Baringo County Governor H.E Stanley Kiptis while appreciating them said his focus is to make Macadamia farming as a source of livelihood because it a high value nut.
H.E Kiptis announced that through Kenya National Chamber of Commerce, Slovakian government has secured a ready market for macadamia nuts in European Countries.
“In the First Phase, there are already 20,000 seedlings that will be distributed from tomorrow in various parts of the County, while the phase 2 will see more that 30,000 seedlings distributed to the already registered farmers under this programme spearheaded by my administration,” he explained.
According to Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Baringo County Branch, Elisha Kiplagat who represented the Slovakia government, they are going to work closely Cooperative societies since it provides a link between them with government and development partners who are willing to support in the sectors they intend to promote.
The seedlings will be distributed through the existing active Cooperative societies adding that the number of farmers who have registered for the seedlings are more than the number for phase one.
