Beekeeping has traditionally been practiced in the county over a long time and has been inherited over several generations by the communities. The county is currently leading in honey production nationally but it has the potential to help Kenya rival world leading honey producing countries like Ethiopia and Israe
lHoney production volume within record is 882 Metric Tonnes valued at KES 350 million ((livestock production validated statistics 2022) and beeswax of 162.596 MT. Not all honey produced is recorded and therefore these statistics could be below the actual production. If the potential is increased to 40%,( currently the county honey production is at 10%) bee keepers and other value chain actors will fetch an estimated annual income of USD 9 Million (over Shs 1.2 Billion).
Investment by the County Government in support of the apiculture value chain has seen the increase of honey production over the years from average of 500 MT to 882 MT. With improved honey produces and marketers’ capacity being improved, proper harvesting techniques and handling have been adopted.
ANNUAL POTENTIAL - HONEY 10,000METRIC TONNES BEES WAX 1,000 METRIC ANNUALLY.
CURRENT PRODUCTION - LESS THAN 10% OF ITS POTENTIAL.
HONEY PRODUCTION - 2013 - 500MT - 2023 883MT
This has seen the processing and marketing of high quality honey in food grade packaging and handling containers being used compared to the past where recycle bottles of alcohol and paints were used. Honey prices have registered marked improvement due to value addition; honey sold now is selling semi and refined honey compared to raw harvested honey.
